Name: Hythlodaeus
Canon: Final Fantasy XIV
Canon Point: Post-6.0/Endwalker
Age: Unclear; definitely adult-aged by the time he died, technically some thousands years old at minimum.
History/Personality: Wiki Link. (Though it's very sparse as far as personality, so I'll try to go into more detail.)
Seemingly presentable and perfectly polite, Hythlodeaus is friendly and personable; almost always wearing a smile and a sunny mood, and willing to chat up anyone if they're so inclined, even if they've just met. He's a bit of a chatterbox in that way, though he genuinely loves to hear what other people have to say, and finds learning and hearing about new things fascinating. He's quick to compliment others, and shower those he loves and admires with praise; he's a bit of an optimist in this way, always looking for the best in people, or for the bright side of a situation, and always open to new ideas, new people or new experiences. Deep down, he has a very kind heart, possessing a vast capacity for caring for those around him; he considers it his most important duty in life to support his two closest friends, rather than possessing any ambition of his own, and doesn't seem to have the heart to fully reject ideas submitted to the Bureau of the Architect when it's clear that the creators are passionate about their subject.
Despite his cheerful disposition, it comes with an unassailable sense of humor and mischief. Hythlodaeus will often poke fun at friends and foes alike (though he mostly prefers to tease his friends), and is quick to try and lighten a situation, even when things look grim. He's perfectly willing to stretch the rules (such as sneaking an unknown 'familiar' into the Elpis research facility) as long as no harm is done, and is not only willing but eager to assist his friend Azem in missions that most Amaurotines would see as pointless and troublesome. Though the mission was potentially dangerous... he has a hard time saying no, sometimes. While he's not necessarily a prolific troublemaker on his own, he's a fantastic enabler, and quickwitted enough to lend his aid to questionable ideas. Even still, none of his mischief is done with any sort of malice or ill-intent, he simply enjoys having a bit of fun.
Make no mistake however, the man is still extremely intelligent. Thanks to his job as Chief of the Bureau of the Architect, he has a deep and thorough knowledge of all the myriad creations brought to life in Amaurot, and can recall most with ease. He's also quite observant, able to discern weak points with ease, as well as emotionally intuitive enough to watch and discern things from his conversation partner. However, aside from being a easy and eager talker, he claims to lack any practical talent-- he has no martial talent, does not seem inclined to make creations himself, and has far weak magic and aether than others. Because of this, he sees himself as rather useless. As Amaurot is a society that places heavy importance on being useful and fulfilling one's purpose, he bemoans his own uselessness, as it leads to an inability to take any meaningful action. Because of this, he prefers to stay in his lane, usually taking more passive roles while offering as much love and support as he can for those that can be useful. He's very humble in this regard, willing to acknowledge his own shortcomings, though one can also say it's self-deprecating; enough so that he sees his own purpose as meaningless without others, and was willing to sacrifice himself easily in order to try and help save his people from an inevitable demise. He makes no secret of how little he thinks of himself, though he's always quick to mask it in an air of humor-- and would instead rather talk about others and their great points instead.
In the end, he's more sentimental than most inhabitants of Amaurot; though he is not strong enough to take action with whatever his soul sight reveals to him, he is happy simply to be able to see. To see the souls of the dead, the aether of life, and the beauty in the creations of his fellow Ancients-- unlike those around him, he finds enjoyment in simply seeing and watching the beauty and greatness around him. Despite being so eager to make light of things, he's extremely genuine and sincere, and rarely has a harsh word to say about anyone.
Would you consider your character to be heroic? Why or why not?: It's hard to say; while Hythlodaeus is certainly compassionate and eager to lend a helping hand, he was raised in a society that puts purpose and usefulness above everything, and generally supports non-intervention. He has assisted Azem with heroic acts before, but he's rarely taken the initiative to do anything himself, and makes little effort to confront the problems of Amaurot's society, instead accepting it despite his own personal feelings. On the other hand, he was willing to die in order to help save his fellow man during the Final Days, and still attempted to save the Warrior of Light against Hermes' memory erasing machine. So, it's more accurate to say he has the potential for heroism; his heart is certainly in the right place, though he has done little of it himself, and is not wont to take action on his own.
Powers/Abilities:
Soul sight- Hythlodaus' one and only talent, he was born with a very strong and acute perception allowing him to see peoples' souls. This includes the individual color of souls, if more than one soul is inhabiting the same body, and the ability to perceive them from a very long distance away. He is even able to see souls if they are faint or barely present, as well as the lingering presence and energy of the souls of the dead, and the ambient energy of the world around them.
Creation Magic- Like all Ancients, Hythlodaeus (in theory) has the ability to create objects and creatures simply by endowing it with his own aether... but in practice, while he knows the mechanics of such a thing, he has prohibitively little stores of aether to draw upon, to the point where he can't even transform his own physical form like other Ancients. At best, he could probably conjure up some small, inanimate objects, if that. Compared to other Ancients, he has rather poor control of aether and magic.
Soulseer- Hythlodaeus shares some skills with Bards, though this mostly translates to a reasonably refined skill in archery. Though he claims to be mediocre, he has a skill in identifying a target's weak points, and has a limited amount of healing magic, with the ability to use a skill like Benediction.
Inventory:Nothing, he's super dead Just the clothes off his back and his white mask.
